WHY THIS TOOL
Copy ChatGPT to Word.
Keep the formatting.
ChatGPT writes headings, lists, links and tables as Markdown. A normal paste can leave the markers visible or flatten the structure. Pasteful turns that response into editable rich text for an open Word document, with DOCX available when you need a new file.
- Use ChatGPT's copy button on the response.
- Paste it here and check the Word preview.
- Choose Copy rich text for an open document, or Download DOCX for a new file.
WORD OUTPUT

QUESTIONS
Before you
paste.
How do I copy ChatGPT to Word without losing formatting?+
Use ChatGPT's copy button, paste the response into Pasteful, check the preview, then choose Copy rich text. In Word, use Keep Source Formatting when you want to retain the prepared headings and lists.
Why does Word show **asterisks** and # symbols?+
Those characters are Markdown markers for bold text and headings. Word can treat them as ordinary text. Pasteful converts the markers into rich text before you copy.
Why do ChatGPT bullet points disappear in Word?+
Word may receive plain text or apply the surrounding document style instead of keeping the list. Copy rich text with Pasteful, then choose Keep Source Formatting. Use Merge Formatting only when you want the pasted text to adopt the document's styles.
Will the headings become real Word headings?+
Rich copy keeps the heading hierarchy. DOCX export writes semantic heading levels. After pasting, check Word's Navigation Pane if the document needs an accessible heading structure.
Does it keep ChatGPT tables?+
Yes. Markdown tables become editable tables in rich copy and DOCX export. Check wide tables, merged cells and complex layouts before sharing.
Should I copy rich text or download DOCX?+
Copy rich text when a Word document is already open and you want to add one section. Download DOCX when the response should become a new file or attachment.
Does it keep ChatGPT equations and citations?+
Treat equations, footnotes and generated citations as review items. Pasteful keeps readable text and links where available, but you should compare technical notation and every citation with the source before sharing.
How do I remove the grey background from ChatGPT text in Word?+
Pasteful creates clean semantic HTML without ChatGPT's page styles, colours or background. Copy rich text, then use Merge Formatting if you want the result to adopt the surrounding Word document. If Word still shows shading, select the affected text and clear highlighting or paragraph shading in Word.
Can I copy a whole ChatGPT conversation into Word?+
Pasteful formats the text you deliberately paste; it does not fetch or export your chat history. For the cleanest result, copy complete responses one at a time. Use ChatGPT's own export for a complete conversation archive.
How is the ChatGPT to Word conversion tested?+
Pasteful publishes 3,244 deterministic records generated from 27 formatting documents. They cover structures such as headings, lists, links, code and tables across supported outputs. This proves the parser and renderer behaviour for those fixtures; it is not a promise that every Word version and clipboard will render identically.
Does it work in Word for Mac, Word Online, iPhone and iPad?+
The prepared rich text works with current Word clients, but clipboard behaviour varies by browser and device. If a mobile browser blocks the Paste button, press and hold inside the editor and choose Paste. Use DOCX when mobile rich paste is unreliable.
