Why ChatGPT formatting breaks in Word
ChatGPT responses often contain Markdown structure. Bold text is marked with double asterisks, headings use hash symbols, and tables use pipes. The ChatGPT interface renders those markers, but Word does not always receive or interpret the same structure when you copy and paste.
The clipboard can also hold more than one version of the selection, including plain text and rich HTML. The browser, the copy method and Word's paste choice decide which version arrives. Keep bullet points, numbering and indentation
Copy the complete ChatGPT response with its copy button. Paste it into Pasteful and confirm that numbered steps are still numbered, bullet lists remain lists, and nested items are indented beneath the right parent.
Choose Copy rich text and paste with Keep Source Formatting. If the text must match an existing template, try Merge Formatting and check the list again. Word can apply the surrounding paragraph style, so never assume that a list which looks aligned is still a real list.

Keep ChatGPT tables as editable Word tables

How to copy ChatGPT to Word on iPhone or iPad

Merge Formatting discards most direct formatting while retaining emphasis such as bold and italic. Keep Text Only removes formatting and non-text elements; Microsoft notes that tables become paragraphs.

Run a document check, not just a visual check
